As the NFL Combine gets underway this week, Giants general manager Joe Schoen will get the opportunity to earn some invaluable intel into some of the elite prospects while also scouring the pool of lesser-known prospects for some potential bargains.
Importantly, this will be the first opportunity for NFL decision-makers to get a direct look at some of the underclassmen in this year’s draft who weren’t eligible to play in any All-Star games.
Let’s identify some players at positions of need who the Giants could be paying special attention to:
Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders
While it can be disappointing for fans and analysts when top quarterbacks opt not to throw at the combine, there’s a school of thought that you have more to lose than you have to gain if you’ve already established your talent and athleticism.
Sanders has opted not to throw but is focused on interviews and helping teams to learn about him as a person. The Giants will no doubt be trying to find out as much as possible from this process.
Oregon DT Derrick Harmon
Harmon is a disruptive defensive tackle who some analysts feel has a good chance to be drafted in the first round.
However, most analysts are calling this the deepest defensive tackle class in years, so a player like Harmon could be a potential bargain early in the second round if a few players jump ahead of him.
The Giants will be looking to upgrade on the defensive interior and Harmon, who had five sacks in 2024, could give New York a potentially dominant presence alongside Dexter Lawrence.
Purdue OL Marcus Mbow
Former top-10 pick Evan Neal showed some signs of improvement in the second half of last season, but his overall play was still far too inconsistent, so the Giants could be looking to groom someone else for starting right tackle. They could then move Jermaine Eluemunor inside or even consider moving on from Andrew Thomas.
Mbow is a prospect who could be a consideration on Day 2 after having impressed in position drills during Senior Bowl week. He shows dominance at times in the running game but also moves well in pass protection, so his athletic numbers could end up being better than expected.
East Carolina CB Shavon Revel Jr.
Revel is a player who is widely considered a first-round talent, but he had reconstructive surgery on his knee in October following an ACL tear.
He’ll be at the combine for medical assessments and interviews, with the latest reports indicating that he is expected to be cleared in time for the summer. A Giants team that desperately needs reinforcements in the secondary will be watching closely.
If he drops to day two and the Giants are prepared to be patient with him, the 6-foot-3 Revel could be an ideal player to pair with the smaller Deonte Banks, who was a 2023 first-round pick.
Notre Dame safety Xavier Watts
The Giants struggled to force turnovers in 2024.
In fact, none of their players managed to intercept more than one pass. A player such as Watts, who intercepted 13 passes over the past two seasons, could potentially bring another dimension to their secondary.
Watts, who previously played wide receiver and linebacker before finally converting to safety, was at Notre Dame for five seasons.
He’s currently viewed as a potential day two pick but will be eager to try and boost his stock with a strong performance in workouts.
