Ahead of their game against the Washington Capitals on Saturday, the Pittsburgh Penguins honored a late broadcasting legend.
Longtime voice of the Penguins, Mike Lange, died Wednesday in his Pittsburgh home at the age of 76. The Penguins celebrated Lange’s life and legacy in a pre-game ceremony, as messages from players and coaches rang through PPG Paints Arena on the video board and Lange’s two sons and their families – as well as Lange’s broadcasting family – took the ice.
Players for both the Penguins and the Capitals are also wearing microphone patches on their helmets to honor Lange:

“Every time you hear replays of big memories, like Stanley Cup wins or big goals by Mario or stuff like that β that’s his voice,” defenseman Kris Letang said. “So, it means a lot for the city and for all of the players that are in this dressing room.
It was clear to see what Lange meant to Pittsburgh, as a long standing ovation was held during a call to celebrate his life at the conclusion of the ceremony.
A moment of celebration for Mike Lange. Tremendous and tastefully done ceremony by the Penguins for Lange, who would not have wanted anything depressing. pic.twitter.com/YV5ltnUJf7

Lange’s famous broadcasting headset – an old headset that he wore for the entirety of his broadcasting career – was also on display for fans to take photos with before it was taken up to a broadcast booth that is empty and dedicated to Lange for Saturday’s game.
If one thing is for certain, it’s that Lange will never be forgetten by the Penguins, the city of Pittsburgh, and the hockey community.
