Salford Red Devils are under investigation by the Rugby Football League following their squad selection for Saturday’s heavy defeat by St Helens.

Saints ran in 15 unanswered tries to kick off their season with a whopping 82-0 victory – the largest winning margin in Super League history.

Prior to the game, Salford had said they would field a team featuring “predominantly reserve squad players” as they are still under sustainability cap restrictions despite a takeover of the club going through on the eve of the season.

“The RFL have today contacted Salford Red Devils to confirm that a compliance investigation will be launched to consider the circumstances around their squad selection for Saturday’s Betfred Super League fixture at St Helens, and whether they have brought the sport into disrepute,” an RFL statement said.

The club have seven days to respond.

A takeover by a consortium led by businessman Dario Berta was completed earlier in February, which included clearing the club’s debts.

In a statement given before Saturday’s fixture, the club said that all documents related to the change of ownership had been submitted to the RFL.

Salford will welcome Leeds Rhinos on Saturday as they play their first home game of the 2025 Super League season.
