St Helens boss Paul Wellens said his team will not underestimate Salford Red Devils as they kick off their 2025 Super League season by facing them on Saturday.
Saints welcome a Red Devils side which have had a tumultuous time off the field, with a takeover by a consortium led by businessman Dario Berta eventually going through on the eve of the season.
Despite their off-season troubles, Salford come into 2025 off the back of their best season ever in the Super League era having finished fourth and above Saints in the table last term.
“Every single club will want to get off to a good start to the season and we’re no different there. We understand we’re coming up against a very strong and dangerous side in Salford,” Wellens told BBC Radio Merseyside.
“They challenge you in a number of different ways, but I think you need to be careful you don’t fall into the trap of thinking that because they play expansive, they’re not tough.”
Saints’ season opener – which is live on BBC Two – could feature the debuts of Kyle Feldt and Tristan Sailor after the pair joined ahead of the 2025 campaign.
“The preparations are going really well and those guys are really excited to play their first Super League game for St Helens,” Wellens added.
“We’ve had a really good, intense training session which the lads really enjoyed being a part of, not just the lads who are playing, but everybody within the squad contributes to those sessions.”
