The chorus of boos conducted during the American national anthem has been heard across arenas in Canada this weekend, marking a growing trend in response to the United States’ newly imposed tariffs on Canadian imports – including inside Scotiabank Arena.
In the NBA on Sunday, the Toronto Raptors hosted the Los Angeles Clippers at Scotiabank Arena, where fans inside the venue continued the ongoing anthem protest following similar scenes at NHL games in Vancouver and in the nation’s capital (Ottawa) over the weekend – booing ‘The Star-Spangled banner.’

On Monday, the Toronto Maple Leafs returned to practice after a day off, preparing for their Tuesday matchup against the Calgary Flames. After the on-ice session, American-born player and newly named captain of Team USA for the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off, Auston Matthews, was inevitably asked about the situation.
However, he was noncommittal and quick to steer clear of the political debate.
“Not to get into politics, but you’re going to get into politics,” said Matthews with a smile. “Well, I’m not going to get into politics, so I’ll take the next question.”
Asked for his thoughts on Canadians booing the American anthem at sporting events, Team USA captain Auston Matthews declined comment. Says he’s not going to get political.

As mentioned, Matthews will be steering the ship of the leadership group at the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off beginning on February 12 for Team USA – where the reaction from Canadian sports fans is likely to continue at the Bell Centre in Montreal as a host for the tournament.
Entering Tuesday’s contest, Matthews has 20 goals, 20 assists, and 40 points through 37 games.
