The NHL announced Saturday morning that Calgary Flames netminder Dustin Wolf was named the league’s Rookie of the Month for January.
In ten games, the 23-year-old from Gilroy, CA, produced a 7-3-0 record with 23 goals against for a .922 SV% and 2.32 GAA. He earned a 3-1-0 record at home and went 4-2-0 on the road.
Wolf is one of the best goalies on home ice, thanks to a 13-3-1 record through 17 games. Before the holidays, he was not considered for the Calder Trophy for Rookie of the Year.
However, Wolf has joined the conversation with the Flames, who are pushing for a playoff spot. Depending on how far Calgary goes, he could be the dark horse to become the first goalie since Steve Mason in 2008-09 to win the award.
By winning Rookie of the Month, Wolf becomes the first Flames player since Johnny Gaudreau in December 2014 and March 2015 to earn the honor.
Historically, Wolf became the second rookie goalie in franchise history to win seven games in a month, following in the footsteps of Hockey Hall of Famer Mike Vernon, who went 9-3-0 in November 1986 and 7-3-1 in December 1986.
Moreover, the Flames rookie goalie tied an NHL record with four road wins in January, joining Logan Thompson, Marc-Andre Fleury, and Jake Oettinger on an exclusive list.
In 29 games, Wolf has a 19-8-2 record, two shutouts, a 2.51 GAA, and a .917 SV%.
