The Taylor Hall situation was an interesting one this season and there seemed to be multiple moving parts with him.
He was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes as part of a three-team deal that also involved the Colorado Avalanche. The Chicago Blackhawks received their third-round pick back from the Hurricanes, didn’t retain any of Hall’s $6 million cap hit, but did retain $4.625 million of Mikko Rantanen’s contract.
According to Elliotte Friedman, there were a couple of reasons for how the trade went down and the involvement of the Blackhawks. Hall’s value was less than a third-round pick and Chicago was only able to acquire that pick back for shipping the veteran off to Carolina because they retained $4.625 million of Rantanen’s deal. The Blackhawks would have only been able to retain $3 million max from Hall’s contract.

It was initially believed that both Hall and Ryan Donato would be able to fetch a third-round pick each for the Blackhawks this season. That has proven to be half true, but not in the way that was expected. Unfortunately, the Blackhawks didn’t get a great half season by Hall since he was coming off a big injury that kept the veteran out for most of last season.
The 33-year-old scored nine goals and recorded 24 points in 46 games for Chicago this season while averaging 14:59 of ice time per game. He was up and down the lineup and even a healthy scratch at one point.
Other than the Hurricanes, it was also noted that the Florida Panthers had interest in Hall. Considering the Blackhawks went with Carolina to send Hall to, this likely indicates that the Panthers weren’t willing to go as high as a third-round pick to acquire the veteran.
Maybe there’s more luck with the Blackhawks getting the expected return for Donato if he’s traded considering his cap hit is much lower, he’s proven to be versatile, and is having a career year.
