Tiger Woods’ Genesis Invitational moving to Torrey Pines Golf Course from fire-ravaged LA

It’s official – Tiger Woods’ Genesis Invitational is being moved from Riviera Country Club to Torrey Pines Golf Course.

The third signature event of the PGA Tour season announced on Friday that the tournament would move from its home in Pacific Palisades, California, because of the wildfires that continue to devastate the Los Angeles area.

Genesis is scheduled for Feb. 13-16.

Keeping the event in California and the proximity to Riviera Country Club were primary factors for selecting Torrey Pines.

Torrey Pines, located in La Jolla, north of San Diego, is hosting the Farmers Insurance Open this week. That would save Genesis much of the difficulty of preparing for a major event in less than a month, including the building of grandstands and corporate hospitality suites.

The South Course at Torrey hosted the 2021 U.S. Open won by Jon Rahm.

As of Friday morning, the Palisades fire has burned more than 50,000 acres and destroyed more than 16,000 structures. The death total for all the fires is 28.

Tiger Woods has had plenty of success at Torrey Pines

Woods, who hosts Genesis and whose foundation is the beneficiary, is expected to play in the event. He withdrew from last year’s event in the second round after feeling ill.

The 15-time major champion and Jupiter Island resident has had plenty of success at Torrey Pines with eight victories, seven at the Farmers Insurance Open and the 2008 U.S. Open. Woods did not play the 2021 U.S. Open, recovering from his auto accident that year.

The Pete Dye Stadium Course at PGA West in La Quinta, California, and TPC Scottsdale also have been under consideration to host Genesis. The American Express was played at PGA West last week and the TPC Scottsdale will host the WM Phoenix Open the week before the Genesis.

Hideki Matsuyama  won the 2024 Genesis Invitational, shooting a 62 in the final round and finishing with a 17-under 267.
