PGA Tour moves Genesis Invitational to Torrey Pines in San Diego after Los Angeles-area fires

After a series of fires devastated the Los Angeles region earlier this month, the PGA Tour has found a new temporary home for the Genesis Invitational.

The Tour announced Friday this year’s Genesis Invitational will be played at Torrey Pines in San Diego. It will still be played from Feb. 13-16 as scheduled, but now just about 120 miles south down the California coast. As the course just hosted the Farmers Insurance Open, the infrastructure was already in place at Torrey Pines to make the easy switch. The tournament will be played on the South Course.

The signature event has long been held at Riviera Country Club, which sits in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles. The Palisades fire erupted earlier this month and has burned more than 23,000 acres, largely destroying the entire neighborhood. It hit more than 6,600 structures and killed at least 11 people.

The fire was one of several that broke out in Southern California during a record wind event that brought gusts up to 100 mph. The Eaton fire, which was up near Altadena and Pasadena, burned more than 14,000 acres, destroyed more than 9,400 structures and killed at least 17 people. Neither fire has been totally contained yet.

Though the Palisades fire did not destroy Riviera Country Club like much of the neighborhood around it, the Tour announced last week that the event would be moved to a nearby course. Riviera Country Club will host the golf events at the Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028 and will then host the U.S. Open in 2031.

The Riviera Country Club is expected to host The Genesis Invitational in 2026.

The Genesis Invitational was one of several sporting events in the region to be postponed due to the fires. The Lakers, Clippers and Kings all had games postponed, and the Los Angeles Rams’ wild-card matchup against the Minnesota Vikings was moved to Arizona. The fires destroyed the houses of several in the sports world, including Lakers coach JJ Redick and Warriors coach Steve Kerr’s mother.

The Genesis Invitational, which is hosted by Tiger Woods, is a key part of the Tour’s early West Coast swing. Hideki Matsuyama won the event last season. Torrey Pines hosts the Farmers Insurance Open, which started on Jan. 22, each season. The course, which sits along the coast just north of San Diego, most recently hosted the U.S. Open in 2021. Woods has won at the course eight times, including in a playoff at the U.S. Open in 2008.

After the Genesis Invitational, the Tour will have one event in Mexico before its Florida swing kicks off on Feb. 27.
