Flames Quarter-Century Second Team: Jacob Markström

The NHL announced the Calgary Flames Quarter-Century team on Jan. 11, featuring several memorable names in franchise history.

Today, we want to examine Jacob Markström‘s tenure with the club and his credentials for the Flames’ second team.

The Florida Panthers originally drafted Markström with the 31st pick in the 2008 Draft. He eventually came to North America for the 2010-11 season, appearing in one NHL game while playing with the Rochester Americans in the AHL.

In four seasons, he played in only 43 games, compiling an 11-25-8 record before a trade to the Vancouver Canucks on Mar. 4, 2014, that brought Roberto Luongo back to Florida.

Markström would star with the Canucks for seven seasons, becoming their top goalie skating in 229 games earning a 99-93-27 record. Despite his regular season numbers, he led Vancouver to the playoffs only once in 2019-20.

Starting in 2017-18, Markström began a streak of 20-win seasons, which currently stands at seven. Additionally, he put together his first two winning seasons in 2018-19 and 2019-20 ahead of free agency.

As a top goalie available, the Flames signed Markström to a six-year deal worth $36 million on Oct. 9, 2020. His first season was rough as he went 22-19-2 with a 2.66 GAA and .904 SV%.

However, a year later, he was a Vezina Trophy finalist, losing to Igor Shesterkin of the New York Rangers. That season, he was 37-15-9 with a 2.22 GAA and .922 SV% while pacing the NHL with nine shutouts.

He led the Flames to the second round of the playoffs, where they lost to the Edmonton Oilers. Unfortunately, it seemed like Markström never recovered from that series loss.

In his final two seasons with the Flames, Markström was just 46-44-14 with a 2.85 GAA and .898 SV%.

Although Markstrom only spent four seasons with the Flames, he is a top-five goalie in franchise history, and here’s a breakdown of his numbers from this century:

  • Games Played: 213 (2nd)

  • Wins: 105 (2nd)

  • Losses: 78 (2nd)

  • OT Losses: 25 (2nd)

  • Shots Faced: 5,836 (2nd)

  • Saves: 5,291 (2nd)

  • Goals Against: 545 (2nd)

  • Goals Against Average: 2.63 (4th min. 100 games)

With two-time American Hockey League Goalie of the Year Dustin Wolf waiting for his opportunity, the Flames traded Markström to the New Jersey Devils on June 19, 2024.

The Flames received a first-round pick in 2025 and defenseman Kevin Bahl as part of the deal.

Meanwhile, in his first season in New Jersey, Markström has helped the Devils become one of the top teams in the Metropolitan Division.
