The Chicago Blackhawks took on the Detroit Red Wings for some Original Six hockey at Little Caeser’s Arena. After a big win over the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday, the Hawks were looking to carry some momentum on the road.
With former Blackhawks stars Patrick Kane and Alex DeBrincat on the other team, the Red Wings brought their five-game winning streak into this match. For Kane in particular, he entered on a five-game point streak as well.
On the Blackhawks, Connor Bedard came in with an impressive point streak of his own. With points in his last eight games, he is amongst some of the best in NHL history in the record books when it comes to point streaks by teenagers.
It took Kane 4:26 to extend his streak to six games. He made a pass to Alex DeBrincat who sniped for a 1-0 lead.
Shortly after that, Connor Bedard did the same thing. He sent a pass to Ryan Donato who scored his 12th of the season to tie the game. Make that nine straight games with a point for Bedard. It’s an impressive streak for the 19-year-old old who has a ton of pressure on him to produce offense.
After the current and former Blackhawks stars traded their point streak extensions, the Wings took over. Lucas Raymond, Andrew Copp, and Albert Johansson each scored to make it 4-1 Wings. Kane assisted on two of those three goals for a total of three points on the night.
It looked from there like the Hawks were doomed but Teuvo Teravainen scored two goals in the third period to make it interesting. He ended a long 10-game goal drought with those goals which is important for him going forward.
While the Hawks were trying to tie it late, Marco Kasper threw one into the empty net and Detroit took that 5-3 win to the bank.
Although it was nice to see Connor Bedard extend his point streak again, the Blackhawks didn’t look good in this game. They were outshot 28-15 and there was only so much that Petr Mrazek could do.
Patrick Kane was the first star of the game for the Wings which is tough for the Blackhawks. They decided that they didn’t want to have him around during the rebuild so nights like this will happen where he torches them.
Next up for Chicago is the defending Western Conference Champion Edmonton Oilers. Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and the Oilers are as skilled as any team in the league so a much better effort will be needed if they want to win the second half of a back-to-back.
