Well, look who’s golfing his ball at the 2025 Sony Open in Hawaii.
Nearly a decade after his last victory, Zach Johnson walked off the course at Waialae Country Club in contention once again on the PGA Tour. There’s still 36 holes to go but the 2023 Ryder Cup captain will be seeking to nail down his first win since claiming the 2015 Open Championship. His last top 10 came in 2021.
Johnson opened his second round Friday 4-4-2-2 en route to a second straight 66. His third hole deuce was a hole-out from 180 yards. He then drained a birdie putt on the par-3 fourth. Birdies on the ninth and the 15th holes were followed by his lone bogey of the day ‒ and only his second of the week ‒ at the 17th hole.
Johnson, 48, played 22 times last year but missed nine cuts, including his last three events in the fall series. His best finish was a tie for 12th at the Cognizant Classic nearly 10 months ago.
But this week, he’s finding a spark. He’s tied with Sepp Straka, who also has back-to-back 66s, as well as Lee Hodges (68-64) but Kensei Hirata from Japan was leading when Johnson signed for his card.
