Ridly Greig has signed a contract extension with the Ottawa Senators, the team announced on Friday, with the 22-year-old inking a four-year deal with an annual cap hit of $3.25 million.
The new agreement will take effect at the start of next season and expire in 2029. At the end of this new contract, Greig will be 26 years old and a restricted free agent.
Greig is approaching the conclusion of the entry-level contract he signed with the team in 2020, which pays him $863,334 per season.
The Lethbridge, Alta. native was selected with the Senators’ 28th pick in the 2020 NHL Draft. He is currently in his third season with the team and is on pace for similar numbers to last year.
Last season, Greig scored 13 goals and recorded an identical 13 assists for 26 points in 72 games with the Sens. He’s proven to be a solid depth scoring option for Ottawa, and has blossomed into a gritty player that gets under the skin of the opposition.
He displayed his pesty energy last season in a meeting with provincial rivals, the Toronto Maple Leafs. He injected new energy into the Battle of Ontario on an incident that many Leafs and Sens fans will remember for a long time.
On Feb. 10 of last season, Ottawa had a 4-3 lead late in the third period against Toronto. With the Leafs’ net empty, Greig had a breakaway to ice the game. As he approached the empty cage, he winded up for a slapshot and hammered the puck into the net.
Toronto defenseman Morgan Rielly didn’t take these actions lightly and cross-checked Greig after scoring, causing a big scrum. This moment became instantly viral around the hockey community.
As a result, Rielly received a five-game suspension while Greig and the Sens walked away with the win.
Over the past three seasons, the Senators have been a weakness for the Maple Leafs, earning a 5-3-1 record. However, the Battle of Ontario could reach new levels as Toronto and Ottawa have a chance to face off in the first round of the playoffs this post-season.
