The old adage is that the fight before the fight in MMA is the one with the scale.
Weight-cutting struggles and eventual weight misses are a regular part of the sport. Throughout 2025, we’ll update this story each time there is an infraction on the UFC scale – or fights that are scrapped because of issues with a fighter’s weight.
Here’s a running list that will update throughout the 2025 calendar year. Fighters listed are in chronological order of their scheduled bouts.
(List updated after UFC Fight Night 249 weigh-ins in Las Vegas on Jan. 10, 2025.)
Jose Johnson
Event: UFC Fight Night 249 (Jan. 11)
Location: UFC Apex, Las Vegas
Division: Flyweight
Final weight: 128.5
Opponent: Felipe Bunes (13-7 MMA, 0-1 UFC)
Notes: Johnson (16-9 MMA, 1-2 UFC) came to the UFC as a bantamweight, but successfully dropped to flyweight in 2024 for a loss to Asu Almabayev. His sophomore outing in the weight class didn’t start out well, though, with the weight infraction.
Ihor Potieria
Event: UFC Fight Night 249 (Jan. 11)
Location: UFC Apex, Las Vegas
Division: Middleweight
Final weight: 188
Opponent: Marco Tulio (13-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC)
Notes: Potieria (20-7 MMA, 2-5 UFC) missed the mark for the second time in four fights. He was overweight for a 2024 win over Robert Bryczek – which stands as his lone victory in a five-fight stretch.
