The Chicago Blackhawks’ AHL affiliate, the Rockford IceHogs, have assigned the captain of the team, Brett Seney, to Team Canada for the upcoming Spengler Cup. It is the first time the 28-year-old has played for his country in international play in his career.
Seney isn’t having as good of a season in the AHL in 2024-25 as he normally does, but his track record in the NCAA and AHL speaks for itself. With just the IceHogs over the past three seasons, the AHL veteran has scored 50 goals and recorded 134 points in 154 games.
Since there was a chance that he could get to experience playing for Team Canada, the Blackhawks let him do so. The IceHogs aren’t exactly a great team right now with a record of 11-12-2-1 and sitting fifth in their division.

Players like Frank Nazar and Kevin Korchinski have graduated to the NHL from Rockford, so what’s one more of their top players?
Unfortunately for Seney in his career, he was never able to turn all of his AHL success into NHL success. He played 51 games as a rookie for the New Jersey Devils in 2018-19, but has played 15 combined games in the NHL for the Devils, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Blackhawks since.
Seney representing Canada is just another reason to watch the Spengler Cup this year.
